The Agatha Ama Awotwe Ghansah Memorial Library was created in hopes of helping redirect the path of the children (especially girls) living in Bokoro, Ghana. This library aspires to be a channel through which children of the village are allowed to realize and explore their untapped potential in an environment where intellectual development is encouraged. Exposing these children to worlds beyond the village would inspire them to set their sights high and never to know their limits—an opportunity not offered to Agatha Ghansah.
Agatha was born on March 18th, 1941, in Adjoa, a fishing village in Ghana, to John Yankey, a fisherman, and Maame Duku, a petty trader. Unfortunately, by the age of six, Agatha’s parents had passed away, along with her chance at an education. Agatha was then adopted by Cecilia Yankey, her older sister, who was taking care of six other children....
As of now, the library is located in Bokoro’s Primary School and serves as a place where students can read, receive tutoring, borrow books, and hang out with friends. This is not where our aspirations for the library end. With the land we have acquired, as we receive more support from donations, we plan on building a Children’s Library in the village of Bokoro to further maximize the opportunities that the library offers these children. With the hope of creating a safe space to nurture the mid-stages of childhood development.
I've seen improvement in the children concerning their reading and their vocabulary. Not only that, but it has motivated the children. Now, the children can speak English, unlike the former days.

Bokoro, Ghana
Bokoro is found in the Ahanta West District in the Western Region of Ghana, to the left of Accra and Cape Coast. It has a small population of 3,000, predominantly elderly and children, with most adults moving to various cities in Ghana. The primary means of labor in Bokoro is farming, more specifically palm fruit farming, but still, economically speaking, the village is deprived, its household income being well below the Ghanaian national average. The library is be located in the villages primary school, which is Grade 1-6, to target the hope and enthusiasm that these young kids have to offer.
